Small animals represent vital model systems for the study of organism development and are essential as models of human disease. Genome sequencing projects for a number of organisms are now nearing completion. The task of understanding tens of thousands of new genes in the context of complex organisms is formidable, yet crucial to the understanding of numerous diseases and to the development of new drugs and therapies for human ailments. The Ontario Consortium for Small Animal Imaging will provide the next generation of imaging tools and services to help the genomics revolution attain its objectives. The process of discovery and development will be greatly accelerated by the availability of rapid, specific, non-destructive micro-imaging technologies developed in Ontario.
